Kenya Announces Visa-Free Entry for All Starting January 2024!

In a momentous development, President William Ruto declared that starting from January 2024, Kenya will abolish visa requirements for international visitors, ushering in a significant change aimed at promoting tourism and strengthening global ties. This historic decision represents a departure from the previous visa system, which mandated most international travelers to secure a visa beforehand. The innovative measure involves the implementation of a cutting-edge digital platform, ensuring pre-authorization through electronic travel authorization.

President Ruto, addressing a gathering in Nairobi commemorating 60 years of independence from Britain, highlighted the profound impact of this policy shift. He emphasized that individuals worldwide would no longer bear the burden of applying for a visa to enter Kenya, signaling a transformative approach to global tourism.

To facilitate hassle-free entry, visitors will now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) via a dedicated online platform, eliminating the need for traditional visa applications, physical forms, appointments, and potential delays.

President Ruto’s commitment to visa-free travel extends beyond Kenya’s borders. During a conference in the Republic of Congo in October, he announced plans to extend visa exemptions to people from African countries visiting Kenya by the end of 2023. This aligns with his longstanding advocacy for seamless travel within the African continent.

The tourism sector, a vital component of Kenya’s economy, is poised to reap significant benefits from this policy change. Boasting picturesque coastlines and captivating wildlife safaris, Kenya has long been a preferred global destination. President Ruto’s visionary move seeks to enhance the nation’s appeal, conveying a clear message to the world: “Kenya has a simple message to humanity: Welcome Home!”

Before this groundbreaking announcement, visitors had to undergo the conventional visa application process. The transition to a digital platform aims to simplify and expedite the entry process, making Kenya a more enticing destination for tourists.

In conclusion, President Ruto’s bold initiative not only revolutionizes Kenya’s entry procedures but also paves the way for a new era of seamless travel within Africa. As the nation opens its doors wide, the global community eagerly anticipates the positive impact on tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

Uganda to Host 19th NAM, 3rd G-77 South Summits in January 2024

Uganda is making preparations to host two significant international summits at Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo, Kampala, in January 2024. The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) will focus on “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” while the G-77 South Summit will center around the theme of “Leaving No One Behind.”

The groundwork for these summits began in 2019 when Uganda secured the chairmanship of NAM for the period 2022–2025. However, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the G77 South Summit, originally scheduled for April 2020, was postponed and rescheduled for January 2024.

Hon. Jeje Odongo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, affirmed Uganda’s readiness to host these international summits during a summit-level meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement contact group responding to COVID-19 on March 2, 2023, in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The NAM concept originated at the Afro-Asian conference in 1955 in Bandung, Indonesia, where ten principles, known as the Bandung principles, were adopted to guide the operations of this new international bloc. NAM was established to advance the interests of developing countries amid Cold War tensions and currently comprises 120 countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America the Caribbean, and Europe, which are neither aligned with the East nor the West.

Uganda is set to officially assume the chairmanship of NAM from 2023-2026 on behalf of the African continent, following Azerbaijan, following the geographical rotational basis for the chairmanship.

The Group of 77 (G77), established in 1964 by seventy-seven developing countries, has since grown to include 134 countries from the Global South. Despite the increase in membership, the original name was retained due to historical significance. As the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, the G77 enables Global South nations to advocate for their collective economic interests, enhance their negotiating capacity on major international economic issues, and promote South-South cooperation for development.

Uganda will be the third country to host the G77 South Summit, following Qatar in 2005 and Cuba in 2000. The Kampala Summit aims to enhance South-South Cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and the digital economy, among others.

East African Regional Tourism Expo and the 2023 Magical Kenya Travel Expo commenced with a bang!

East African Regional Tourism Expo and the 2023 Magical Kenya Travel Expo commenced with a bang!

EARTEMKTE 2023 commenced with the introduction of a fresh tourism brand for East Africa. The event, which marks the third edition of the East African Regional Tourism Expo and the 2023 Magical Kenya Travel Expo, is currently underway in Nairobi, the lively capital of Kenya, the host country. Kenya is proudly showcasing the regional expo alongside its flagship event, MKTE.

Over the next three days, the expo aims to highlight the best facets of tourism from each participating country within the East African Community (EAC). The opening ceremony, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, saw representatives from all seven EAC countries – Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While each nation passionately presented its unique attractions, a unified message echoed throughout the ceremony, urging the region to deepen its integration and collectively market and promote its tourism offerings. Dr. Alfred Mutua, Kenya’s Minister of Tourism and Wildlife, the event’s host, stressed the importance of presenting the region as a common destination for a more robust tourism industry.

Dr. Mutua emphasized the significance of regional circuits and called for collaboration to promote the region’s tourism. He identified challenges hindering tourism growth, including the need for improved air connectivity among East African countries, enhanced safety and security, dispelling perceptions of insecurity, and diversifying tourism offerings to attract a broader audience.

The Minister underscored the untapped potential of the region, citing opportunities such as cruise tourism along the Indian Ocean that runs through East Africa. He also highlighted the importance of championing sustainability to preserve the environment and uplift the socio-economic conditions of citizens.

Various speakers, including the Ministers of Tourism from Uganda and South Sudan, Kenya’s Minister in Charge of EAC, the EAC Deputy Secretary General, and high-level delegations from Rwanda and Burundi, echoed the call for a unified approach to tourism marketing.

A notable highlight of the opening ceremony was the introduction of the “Visit East Africa” brand, expected to galvanize the marketing and promotion of the region’s tourism. EARTEMKTE 2023 has attracted significant attention, featuring 110 hosted buyers and 309 exhibitors from 33 countries. The three-day event has captured the interest of both international and local media, solidifying its status as a pivotal moment in the East African tourism calendar.

Uganda welcomes baby tigers

Uganda welcomed two new members to its tiger family. The Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) in Entebbe, the sole home of tigers in East Africa, received a pair of newborns on September 22, 2023. These cubs, born to Brown, the mother, and Yura, the father, are in good health and thriving.

Tigers and other large cats can give birth to varying numbers of cubs. Therefore, when two cubs are born, they are not considered twins but simply two cubs. This fact adds an intriguing dimension to wildlife knowledge!

A naming ceremony for the cubs is planned for the near future. Wild Trust Africa Safaris offers day excursions that include a visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center as part of our  Entebbe tours. Visitors can explore more than just Africa’s youngest striped cats at the center.
